To be unique is to be one of a kind, unparalled, unrivalled, especially in excellence.

In a fiercely competitive world, only those that are able to rise above the current standards will win recognition, commendation and awards. To acquire this cutting edge advantage, one needs to have something going for them that others don’t have.

To be one of a kind, you must be able to go beyond the established norms and practices and offer mankind a different level of quality, a new way of doing things. Recycling yesterday’s ideas or breakthroughs and peddling them as new inventions will not wash. People are fed up with ideas that have worn themselves out as a result of overuse.

Being unique does not mean that others are less important. Not by a long shot! It just means that you are that much better in doing a particular thing than the average person. With this realization, you should never look down at others just because you are better in doing some things than they are. However, you should always strive to up the stakes by going a little further than the competition.

Maintaining a competitive edge over your competition requires one to continually improve their products, services or skills. To do this, you must be up to speed with the latest developments in your field. You should continually apply yourself to researching best practices and cutting edge inventions that will put you at the apex of your field. If this entails going back to college for that extra qualification, by all means hit the lecture rooms. If it means reinventing the wheel, go ahead and reinvent it – but make sure that your new product or service is superior.

The position of uniqueness is not one of pride or self-gratification. It is a humbling position that puts one in the service of others – for in essence you become a leader, leading the rest to a better life, a better future. Your product or service must therefore be able to cut through the maze of has-beens and pioneer a new paradigm shift, a better way of doing things.

When people trust you, they will come to you whenever they need something done – and they will be willing to pay your price. Once you step ahead of the rest, you enter into an uncharted terrain. It’s now your business to chart the terrain the way you want. In other words, you can now set the standards – and the terms! In this terrain, numerous opportunities for growth abound – and competition is virtually non-existent!
