The power of pep talk
Sayings of the Wise
by innocent mwangi Everyday, I take my recommended dose of a nutritional supplement called Veriuni Nutritional Supplement. It’s a wonderful supplement that provides the cells in my body with all the nutrients they require. As long as I have taken my daily dose of nutrients and antioxidants, I leave the house feeling energized, confident that my body cells have been replenished.
Pep talk is more like that. Everyday when we wake up, we should ensure that we are ready and willing to get the day’s job done. We should be able to convince ourselves that we have what it takes to meet the challenges of the day. Talking to yourself is one way of doing this. This may sound strange but it is important that you stand in front of a mirror and talk to your reflection as though you are talking to someone else.
According to the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, 5th edition, to pep is to ‘fill or inspire with energy, invigorate, enliven, cheer up.’ Every morning before you step out of your bed, ensure that you are energized and invigorated enough to face whatever the day brings. And as you walk out of your house, lift up your chin and cheer up, bristling with confident and thankful that God has dealt you yet another day!
It is very important to ensure that you are in the right state of mind before you start the day. If you are like me, a prayer to ask God to give you strength to face yet another day will be a good start. Eleven years ago before I married Jane (eleven years and two sons now), she gave me a gift that I still cherish to the present day. It was actually a small poster that I used to hang by my bedside (today it’s prominently displayed in our sitting room). The poster read: ‘Dear Lord, help me to remember that nothing will happen to me today that you and I, together, cannot handle.’ Everyday I would wake up and read these words and feel so energized. Then I would be ready to face another day. These words are now embedded in my mind. I still repeat them every morning.
If you are to convince anyone of anything, you must start by first convincing yourself. Confident people are infectious. Whenever they come into contact with other people, they rub on to them this confidence, and instantly win their trust. The enthusiasm and passion with which you go about your daily chores has a way of infecting anyone you come into contact with.
Affirming to yourself that you have what it takes to face the day’s challenges is therefore crucial. A friend of mine (Rita Allin) once told me that affirming truth is power. Power and energy are created whenever we affirm to ourselves that we are indeed capable and well equipped to meet the day’s challenges. To leave your house without this affirmation is akin to leaving your house without taking your supplements. What this means is that you will be ill equipped to face whatever the day brings.
Before you leave your house, ensure that you remind yourself of your ability to measure up to the tasks ahead. You can do this by talking to yourself, or, better still, by talking to God, or whoever it is that you trust most. By doing this you will start your day bristling with confidence, and enlivening everyone that you come into contact with. That’s the power of pep talk!
